A New Contender in the Battle of the Acne Products
How many times have you looked in the mirror before an important event, only to discover a boulder sized blemish in the middle of your chin, threatening to ruin your big event? Believe it or not, if it’s only a few blemishes you are suffering from, you are one of the lucky ones: With over 80% of individuals affected by acne at some point in their lives, the occurrence of moderate to severe acne has doubled over the last 20 years, with ever increasing cases of serious cystic acne. This can be both distressing and painful and can result in serious skin damage such as scarring and pitting if not treated quickly and correctly. Acne is no longer simply an issue affecting only teenagers: A new level of treatment is called for in an environment where contributing factors such as sun damage, dietary changes and modern lifestyle choices are resulting in an increase in the number and ages of individuals suffering from this crippling skin condition.
Up until most recently doctors have been prescribing concoctions of Benzoyl Peroxide based creams along with healthy doses of misguided advice to acne sufferers to avoid chocolate and junk food to cure their acne. There is in fact no proof that fatty and greasy foods cause or contribute to the incident of acne. There is however clear evidence that Benzoyl Peroxide based substances can cause a wide range of accelerated skin problems such as excessive redness, peeling and itchiness. One of the companies that supports and utilizes the ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide is Proactiv, delivering it via a 3 step skin care system amidst claims of instant results, a clearer skin and an’ answer for acne’. A powerful bleaching agent, Benzoyl Peroxide is available widely as a common over the counter and prescription product, breaking down and beginning a bacteria killing effect once applied to the skin. Unfortunately this key ingredient of Proactiv, one of the biggest selling acne products to date, has clearly shown in human maximization test’s to cause a contact sensation in 76% of its participants where formulations of Benzoyl Peroxide were used. Couple this with the rather alarming package warning to keep away from lips, eyes and mouth and more concerning sunlight, then we have to wonder is there an alternative to controlling the pain and embarrassment of acne without exposing our skin to further irritation and long term damage?
