| My 7 year old has acne...HELP
Hello everyone. I am brand new here, and this is my first post, so I hope I am in the right forum!!!
My name is Heather, and I have had severe acne since I was 12 (which is when my period started as well). Fast forward, now I'm early 30's and still have acne, but not as severe..and lots and lots of scars. I did accutane twice, did everything. However, I recently underwent a hysterectomy for cancer, so now my hormones are way out of whack (they never were right, ever, so I guess that's okay). My skin is very oily, and even with the radiation I had, my acne stayed. It is horibbly EMBARRASSING to be a 30-something and look like you are in high school with zits everywhere. I was a RN before I got sidelined by this cancer and a back injury, and it is SO humiliating to still battle this. I know the lower end of normal for a girl to start puberty is at 8. But 7? Seems kind of iffy to me..but I know what I saw. My COBRA insurance is about to run out since I've been out of work so long for cancer. From then on I'll have to pay cash for medical visits. The derm I used to go to has moved to bigger and better things and in his place is a doc I don't like. there are not a lot of derms in my area. I was hoping and praying shed wouldn't end up with my skin. Her dad has beautiful, smooth skin. I just don't know what to do. Her skin is VERY sensitive to everything and I am at a loss at what to do. Has anyone had a child go through this so YOUNG??? I know how terribly embarrassing it is to have acne, especially severe acne, and I would do just about anything to prevent my kids from having the same ordeal with acne and horrible doctors who didn't even care!!! When I was going through it, most of them said "Hey, you'll outgrow it!" or "It's what's inside that counts" or something stupid like that. Yes, of course, we all have some beautiful insides, but only if you grew up with severe, cysts all over your face, whitehead and blackheads galore...no one takes the time to care about what you're like on the inside. They're too busy laughting at you!!!
My daughter already is suffering of extreme anxiety, and this is just making things worse!!! And, she keeps picking, which of course I have told her not to, but she doesn't listen. Sigh. I know she will get picked relentlessly.
***I apologize for any typos, it's really late at 4:45 AM!!!****

| I can only tell you what helped me
Unfortunately it sounds like your daughters acne is hereditary, as was yours. But all I can tell you is I have been using FaceDoctorRx For three years and it has really helped my acne. I am a 26 year old and still have acne, actually I didn't start getting it bad until I was 18, when I went through some serious stressful events. I think my hormones are also out of whack and I have the worst period cramps, think I have endemetriosis or something. But the only thing I can recommend is what worked for me. i tried Proactiv and lots of other treatments to no avail, maybe you should take her to see a hormone therapist, maybe you can find out if her hormones are out of whack or something. Sorry I can't give any better advice, keep searching someone has to know what you're going through.

hey guys...i lost my internet for a while (no money
anyway, my 7 year old still has bumps along her nose and between her eyes, and even around her nose. they are venturing out. i don't know if any of you have or have seen babies, but it looks VERY similar to milia which is a kind of "baby acne" that they have at birth. her acne is NOT red, maybe pinkish, with almost "clear" heads instead of "whiteheads" if that makes any sense.
I usually wash her face with Purpose (i help her cause she doesn't really care, like most kids...lol) and last night i even used an astringent on her nose. I am really at a loss here, I have no insurance now. I can't afford to take her to a derm right now. I have to save what I can for her REAL serious medical problems, as well as mine.
Oh well. I guess no one here's seen kids with this type of "acne". And also, to the poster who said my acne was hereditary, no one on either side of my family, at least six generations back has had acne. I was the one who made up for all of them, I guess.

Hey I would recommend that you check out a free guide which actually helped me cure my acne. It has topics on both acne for kids and adults.
The link is in my signature, but still I will put it up here. Free acne guide I am not affiliated with the site in anyway. The book is really informative so I am putting it up here.
Hope I helped.
Regards Hari

Young child with acne: Hi, I know your frustration. My 7 year old girl has had acne on and off since 5 years of age. It is mainly confined to her nose, forehead and chin. I have been from doctor and doctor and answers have varied from 'that's unusual' to 'just keep her skin clean'. We have now been to a dermo who has prescribed an acne cream called Differin which is meant to unclog the blackheads. She has just had a blood test in which they are checking her hormone levels, liver function and things like food intolerances as I suffer from them. I have found a big difference since I have changed her diet. She suffers from constipation so I am ensuring her diet is high in fibre. Since her stools have improved, her skin has improved considerably. Doctors will tell you that acne is nothing to do with diet but I beg to differ. She is also prone to anxiety. I find the anxiety can aggravate the acne. I am just hoping to get this all under control before she hits adolescence.
Hi again, just got blood test results back. She has high levels of the adrenal hormone, DHEA-S, which the doctor thinks might be causing the acne. She has been referred to an endocrinologist. Just went to the Endo today 6/2/09. They believe she has mild CAH (Congential Adrenal Hyperplasia), nothing serious, but may be causing the elevated DHEA-s which is causing the acne. I have to say since using the cream prescribed by the dermo that her acne has just about gone. She will be undergoing some further blood tests in a week, namely the ACTH stimulation test which should give us a final analysis of her adrenal function. She is not showing any other signs of pre-puberty so it may be just a matter of monitoring her DHEA-s levels. I 'll keep things updated as they come to hand. If any of you should have a young child (younger than 8) with acne or other signs of puberty do not hesitate to get your child blood tested. Ask for the following to be tested: DHEAs, Testosterone, LH, FSH, SHBG, and 17 hydroxyprogesterone. I am finally getting some answers after being fobbed off by doctors for the last 2 years. I am hoping that this information will at least help someone else to get some answers as well. There is nothing more distressing to see a young child with acne.

I had a lot of acne before too and it just wouldn't go away. But I found free sites online that helped me learn to use at home products and fruits/veggies from grocery store sinstead of alcohol products. It's helpling me a lot and improving my self esteem. This is the site where I got free recipes from.

Hello, I have been looking for some help with the same problem as BRENDA and your post is the only info I've found that relates to my problem. My 6 year old has had acne for a year now and is mostly in her forehead and blackheads on her nose. I took her to a dermatologist that gave her a topic medication that is really not working. I believe it has to do with a hormonal imbalance given that once I also felt an underarm odor like only adolescents have when they sweat too much. She has no other symptoms. I am interested in knowing if you found a treatment that worked for your daughter. I will do what you suggest in your post and find a pediatric endocrinologist. Thanks for posting! any info that could help me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, My three daughters have similar problems to your daughter and Brenda's too. All three started getting acne around six. Have gone to doctor who referred the two oldest then aged nine and ten to dermothologist. The Dermathologist was useless prescribed retin A which I think they are too young to use. I have not used it yet as acne is not very bad. Have used a Boots Tea Tree and Witchhazel creams which work a little. Got a hemopathic table in health shop for acne which is great. I have tried all the diets - think increasing fibre helps a little. Acne only on forehead. My six year old has started getting little bumps, whiteheads and blackhead on forehead and nose now too. And just like your daughter I think it is hormone related - she has started to use deodrant as she needs to this past few months. Her hair is getting slightly greasy so she is showered every two/three days. My other two daughters are under twelve and non have started their period even though they have slight acne since about six or seven. I think I must get my six year old tested for hormone imbalance too.
By the way my dermathologist said acne can be heredity and my husband and his mum both suffered from it in their youth. I would love to know how things are going with your daughter now.
