What I really think that stinks, quite frankly, are two different issues that come to mind regarding criticism of the Star Wars films. Prequel Bashing: Ever since The Phantom Menace was released in 1999, the three Prequels have been bashed by overzealous fans, most of them from my generation of fans, who say the movies stink because they have CGI characters and aren't "fresh" or "unique" or match the Classic Trilogy in quality. It's almost as if Episodes IV-VI have been raised to near-legendary levels of sophistication and art, when in fact they are - on purpose - 1930s serials told with the technology of the late 1970s and early 1980s. They're good and indeed my favorite films ever, but their characters, situations, and dialog don't have the dramatic heft of, say, Casablanca, Boys Don't Cry, or Flags of Our Fathers. As you point out wisely, the movies are meant to entertain, not to be scrutinized as sources of wisdom, although some of the moral subtexts that make the saga work are indeed essential truths, including "faith in your friends is never a weakness." |
